Understanding Byron Shire Council Waste Services
Byron Shire Council provides a range of waste and recycling services to residents, funded through your annual rates. Knowing what's available — and what's not — can save you time, money, and frustration.
Your Weekly and Fortnightly Collections
Every residential property in Byron Shire receives:
- General waste (red lid): collected weekly. Available in 80L or 140L sizes.
- Recycling (yellow lid): collected fortnightly. Paper, cardboard, glass, hard plastics, aluminium, and steel cans.
- Garden organics (green lid): collected fortnightly. Grass clippings, leaves, small branches, and food scraps (wrapped in newspaper or compostable bags).
Collection schedules vary by area. Check the Byron Shire Council website for your specific collection day, or download the Bin Day app.
Bulky Waste Collection
Council offers scheduled bulky waste pickups — typically one or two per year per household. You can book through the council website or by calling 02 6626 7000. Eligible items include furniture, white goods, mattresses, and general household junk.
What you need to know:
- Items must be placed at the kerb by 6am on your collection day
- Maximum of 2 cubic metres per pickup
- No hazardous materials, tyres, gas bottles, or building waste
- Bookings can fill up quickly — plan ahead, especially before peak periods
Myocum Resource Recovery Centre
The main waste facility for Byron Shire is located at Dingo Lane, Myocum. It's open Wednesday to Sunday, 8am to 4pm (hours may vary on public holidays). Facilities include:
- General waste disposal
- Recycling drop-off (cardboard, metals, plastics)
- Green waste composting
- E-waste drop-off (free for household quantities)
- Household chemical cleanout (periodic events)
- Second-hand shop — buy and sell reusable items
What Council Doesn't Cover
Council services have limitations. Here's where gaps exist:
- Same-day pickup: council bulky waste requires booking days or weeks in advance
- Heavy or bulky items: council won't enter your property — items must be at the kerb
- Commercial waste: businesses aren't covered by residential waste services
- Renovation waste: building materials, concrete, and demolition debris aren't accepted in bulky waste collections
- Large-volume cleanouts: the 2 cubic metre limit won't cover a full house clearance
Community Recycling Stations
Byron Shire has community recycling stations (CRS) at several locations. These accept problem wastes that shouldn't go in your regular bins:
- Batteries (all types)
- Mobile phones
- Light globes and fluorescent tubes
- Ink cartridges
- Smoke detectors
When to Call a Professional
Council services are great for regular waste, but they fall short in several scenarios. Consider professional rubbish removal when:
- You need items removed from inside your home (not just kerbside)
- You need same-day or next-day service
- You have more than 2 cubic metres of waste
- You're dealing with renovation or construction waste
- You're a business that needs commercial waste removal
- You need regular ongoing waste collection
